THE RT. HON. JOHN G. DIEFENBAKER

My intention in painting the Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker is to portray who he is to

Canadians. I show him as a strong, determined, outspoken, confident individual who

represented Canadians in Parliament and the world for almost forty years. He is

portrayed as a thoughtful man with a guiding vision of Canada's great future.

Compositionally, I place him high in the format, giving him great strength, pyramiding

his body to give him height; giving him strong contrast of light and dark. The cool suit

against the warm background and a warm face against a cool cloudcover make him

bounce out of the painting.

His height represents symbolically his strength; the cloudy sky his stormy term in

office as Prime Minister; the wheatfield his productivity and contribution to Canada; the

old abandoned building the fact that he outlived settlers who moved west with him in

the early 1900's; the two broken stalks of grain, in the foreground, represent the two

wives he outlived and the opening, bright clearing in the sky on the left of the painting,

his hopes for Canada's future. The sunset lighting conditions suggest that he is in the

sunset of his life. The strong horizontal design in the landscape and the strong vertical

design of his body form a cross at the point of his heart, symbolizing his love for

Canada.

The landscape is near Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, his home riding.
